From One Student to Our First Annual Concert

In May 2025 we taught a single student. Sixteen months later, seventy performers walked onto the stage at KLSCAH.

People sometimes ask how a music school grows. Ours grew one lesson at a time, which is a slow way to do it and, looking back, the only way we would have wanted.

In May 2025 Virtuoso Élite had one student: an adult who wanted to learn the guitar. On Saturday 26 September 2026 we held our first annual concert at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, with seventy performers, forty performances and around two hundred people in the hall. This post is about the distance between those two days.

In short
  • May 2025: 1 student, an adult beginner on guitar.
  • Today: more than 200 students across Pandan Indah and Damai Perdana.
  • 26 September 2026: our 1st Annual Concert at KLSCAH (中华大会堂), Kuala Lumpur.
  • On the day: 70 performers, 40 performances and around 200 people in the hall.

One student, one guitar

Our first student was an adult beginner who arrived with a guitar and a simple wish to be able to play it. There was no waiting list and no front desk to speak of. There was a teacher, a room in Pandan Indah and a lesson every week.

We mention this because it shaped how we still work. Every lesson here is one-to-one, and every student is taught as though they were the only one, because for a while that was true. That first student is still learning with us, and is a good reminder of where all of this began.

A year measured in recitals

Students kept coming, and as the numbers grew, so did the calendar. Our first performance was the Year-End Showcase on 20 December 2025, held at the academy. Then came the recitals of 2026: two days in March, a drums and gu zheng recital in April, and a Disney-themed recital in July.

Each one was held in our own rooms in Pandan Indah, and each one was a little more crowded than the last. Every recital needed more days, more chairs and a longer running order. That was a good problem to have, but it was still a problem.

On 26 May 2026 we started teaching at our second branch in Damai Perdana, Cheras, so that families on that side of the city no longer had to cross town for a lesson. Today our faculty numbers twenty teachers, each holding at least a music degree. A second branch also meant that, for the first time, our students did not all know each other, and no single recital could bring everyone together.

Outgrowing our own rooms

The July recital is where Ms Kuan saw it most clearly. To give every student a turn on stage, she had to spread it across three days at Pandan Indah. That was the moment she knew our next concert would have to happen somewhere bigger, outside the academy.

When one recital needs three days to fit everyone in, it is time to find a bigger room.

That is how we came to KLSCAH (中华大会堂). It was our first event at an outside venue, and it gave our students something the academy cannot: a proper stage, a long walk from the wings and a hall full of people listening.

For a student who has only ever performed in the room where they take their lessons, that change matters. The piece they know by heart has to survive an unfamiliar space and a much bigger audience. Learning to play well in a strange room, in front of strangers, is a skill of its own, and the only way to learn it is to do it.

The afternoon at KLSCAH

Seventy performers took part in forty performances. The running order mixed instruments and ages, as our recitals always do, so a young beginner might follow a teenager playing something substantial, and both were applauded in the same way.

Many of the performers had played at our quarterly recitals before. For most of them, this was their first time on a stage of that size. Parents who had watched their children play in a room a few metres wide now watched from the back of a concert hall.

At the end, every performer came on stage holding their Certificate of Completion from Virtuoso Élite Music Academy. That is the photograph at the top of this page, and the one on our home page. We have looked at it a great deal since.

A song of our own

The moment we will remember longest came at the close. Our founder, Ms Kuan Jea Yi, wrote a theme song for the academy, and that afternoon it was performed live for the first time, with students and teachers on stage together.

Our lessons are one-to-one and will stay that way, so a shared performance like this is rare for us. That is partly why it meant so much. Students who usually only see each other in the waiting area were performing the same music at the same moment, alongside the teachers who taught them. For a few minutes the whole academy was in one place, making one sound.

What comes next

The quarterly recitals carry on, at the academy and sometimes beyond it, and every student is welcome to take part. The annual concert will come round again next year, and if the school keeps growing we may need a bigger hall. We would be glad of the problem.

To the families who came on 26 September, to the teachers who prepared seventy performers for a stage most of them had never stood on, and to the adult who walked in with a guitar in May 2025 and started all of this: thank you.

Frequently asked questions

When was the first annual concert?

Our 1st Annual Concert took place on Saturday 26 September 2026 at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH). Seventy performers took part in forty performances, with around two hundred people in the hall.

Does every student perform at the annual concert?

Every student is welcome to take part, and nobody is pushed onto a stage before they are ready. A student who sits this one out still has a quarterly recital every three months.

Can families and prospective students come and watch?

Yes. Our recitals and concerts are open to family and to prospective students. Message us on WhatsApp to be added to the guest list for the next one.

How many students does Virtuoso Élite teach?

More than two hundred, across our branches in Pandan Indah and Damai Perdana. Every lesson is one-to-one, for children from age two through to working adults.

Begin with a single note.

A trial lesson is thirty minutes, one-to-one with the teacher — at Pandan Indah or Damai Perdana. Trial lesson fees apply.
