The Gu Zheng — Chinese plucked zither — is one of our most loved programs. We teach traditional repertoire and contemporary arrangements, from finger technique and tuning conventions through to the great pieces. Students perform at recitals alongside students of every other discipline.
The gu zheng (古筝) — the Chinese plucked zither — carries more than two thousand years of musical tradition on twenty-one strings, and it is one of the most loved programs at the academy. Its sound is immediate and beautiful from the very first lesson; its great repertoire rewards years of serious study.
Students learn traditional repertoire and contemporary arrangements side by side, from finger technique and tuning conventions through to the great pieces. No background in Chinese music is needed — the program starts from first principles and is taught with the same seriousness as every discipline in the academy.
Gu zheng lessons are one-to-one. Early lessons build the plucking technique of the right hand and the bending, expressive left hand; tuning and notation conventions are taught alongside, so students become independent musicians rather than imitators.
Start with a trial lesson at Pandan Indah or Damai Perdana — sit at the instrument, learn your first phrase, and hear the sound bloom under your own fingers. Your teacher will advise on obtaining an instrument for home practice when the time comes.
The gu zheng is taught here as living tradition — technique and repertoire handed from teacher to student, one lesson at a time.
The faculty behind every program is the same: 20 teachers, every one holding at minimum a music degree, several with Master’s qualifications — led by founder Kuan Jea Yi, a Universiti Malaya music graduate with a Master of Performing Arts, now pursuing her PhD at the same university.

Every three months students perform — at the academy and at external venues — and every performer receives a VEMA Certificate of Completion.

From age six. Adults are very welcome — the instrument’s sound is rewarding from the first lesson, whatever your age.
Not to begin. Lessons are played on the academy’s instruments; when regular home practice becomes worthwhile, your teacher will advise on choosing an instrument before you buy anything.
